Pro Bono Reporting Deadline Three Weeks Away

Active Ohio attorneys with an email address on file with the Supreme Court of Ohio have until March 31 to voluntarily report pro bono work and financial contributions to programs that provide legal services to persons of limited means for calendar year 2009.

The responses are compiled and reported to the Supreme Court and the legal aid community to further the efforts of the legal services community to enhance the legal aid delivery system. The information collected also documents the commitment of Ohio lawyers to help low income individuals address civil legal needs.

In January, the Supreme Court sent attorneys an email containing a link to the Website to anonymously report pro bono activities. The sender of the email was identified in the recipient’s email as “The Supreme Court of Ohio.”

The reporting process consists of entering information and answering three demographic questions, and will take five to seven minutes to complete.

Law firm equity partners may report a pro rata share of law firm contributions to organizations that provide legal services to persons of limited means.

The Court’s voluntary, anonymous collection of information related to pro bono activities, in conjunction with the Ohio Legal Assistance Foundation, occurred for the first time in January 2009. Attorneys reported more than 123,000 hours of pro bono service for 2008, and about $700,000 in financial contributions.
