Ohio Bar Examination Proctor Information
The Office of Bar Admissions is currently accepting applications to proctor the Ohio Bar Examination. Only one application is required; once the application is submitted, you will be placed on a list of prospective proctors, and you may be contacted by staff in advance of future exams if additional proctors are needed.
EXAM DETAILS
- The exam is administered two times per year - in February and in July.
- The exam is conducted over a period of two days. Exact dates are determined as follows: the first day of the exam is scheduled for the last Tuesday of February/July, and the second day of the exam is the following day.
- The location of the exam varies, and it may be held in more than one location. For example, the February 2025 exam was held in Columbus and the July 2025 bar exam will be held in Cincinnati, Columbus, and Cleveland.
- Applicants may be asked to serve in one of three different proctor roles based on experience:
- Standard Proctors – those responsible for general proctor duties.
- Lead Proctors - those leading a specific testing room.
- Nonstandard Proctors - those proctoring applicants with testing accommodations.
DUTIES
- Commit to serve on both days of the exam from approximately 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
- Maintain security of exam materials and process.
- Distribute, collect, and account for examination materials.
- Observe and monitor examinees before and during the exam to prevent cheating.
- Enforce security protocols and adherence to exam rules.
- Respond to questions regarding the exam process.
- Follow and respond to directions of the exam administrator and Bar Admissions staff.
- Comply with all safety protocols and rules related to the bar exam.
- Lead Proctors (those leading a testing room) and Nonstandard Proctors (those proctoring applicants with testing accommodations) will also be responsible for reading exam instructions and starting/stopping time for certain examinees.
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
- At least 18 years of age.
- Attorneys must have been admitted to the bar for at least five years.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to check written material in order to verify its completeness, accuracy, and consistency.
- Ability to apply knowledge of rules and procedures when responding to questions.
- Ability to move around the testing area regularly.
- Ability to lift and carry materials to and from testing areas.
- Selected proctors are required to attend proctor training.
COMPENSATION
- Compensation is determined by role:
- Standard Proctors receive a $200 honorarium for each day of service, for a total of $400 for the two-day exam.
- Lead and Nonstandard Proctors receive a $250 honorarium for each day of service, for a total of $500 for the two-day exam.
- Please note that proctors are required to serve on both days of the exam; however, should extenuating circumstances prevent a proctor from being present on the second day, the proctor will only be paid for the first day of service.
- Parking, a light breakfast, and lunch are provided to proctors at no charge.
- Travel expenses and lodging are not covered.
APPLICATION PROCESS
- Complete the Ohio Bar Examination Proctor Application.
- If you are selected, you will be contacted by the Office of Bar Admissions approximately one to two months prior to the scheduled exam.
