Justice Sharon L. Kennedy conducted the inauguration ceremonies for the new 2013 Buckeye Boys State officers at Bowling Green State University on June 12. During her remarks to the program's participants, she also thanked the American Legion for all of its service.

Founded in 1936, the American Legion Buckeye Boys State teaches high school students about city and state government through a non-partisan educational approach. Justice Kennedy told the Buckeye Boys State participants about how important the American Legion is to the country.

"For the past 94 years, the American Legion has served the men and women who during times of war have personally sacrificed their lives and families for our freedoms and liberty, serving God and country, so that we remain self-governing citizens," Justice Kennedy said. "Thank you, Legionaries for your service and commitment to serving our country during times of war, and serving the men and women who have sacrificed all so that we may stand here free today."

Justice Kennedy also thanked the Legion members for their dedication to giving young men an opportunity to see firsthand the structure and operation of government.

"This organization has been and continues to be committed to mentoring young people, advancing patriotism, supporting a strong national defense, and is devoted to serving our wartime veterans," Justice Kennedy said.

Justice Kennedy administered the oath of office to the new Buckeye Boys State governor, lieutenant governor, attorney general, state auditor, state treasurer, chief justice, Supreme Court justices, and judges of the appeals courts and Court of Claims.

"Each of you here today has taken an oath to serve the people of your city, county, and state.  Your powers are limited," Justice Kennedy said. "Work within your limitation and you will best serve the needs of your people."

Justice Kennedy is serving her first term on the Supreme Court of Ohio. Prior to joining the Supreme Court, Justice Kennedy served on the Butler County Court of Common Pleas, Domestic Relations Division from 1999 to 2012. Justice Kennedy served as the administrative judge there from 2005 until December 2012. Justice Kennedy began her career in the justice system as a police officer in Hamilton, Ohio. She received her law degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Law.
