Justice Sharon L. Kennedy gave inspirational remarks to hundreds of Newark high school students and guests at the judicial swearing-in ceremony of Judge Craig R. Baldwin to the Fifth District Court of Appeals on April 26.

Gov. John Kasich on March 4 appointed Judge Baldwin to replace retired Judge Julie A. Edwards. Judge Baldwin previously served on the Licking County Domestic Relations Court.

Justice Kennedy asked the audience what they would do if they knew they could not fail.

"It doesn't matter who you are, where you come from, or whether you are rich or poor; everyone can achieve their American dream as long as they are willing to do three things: decide and commit, work hard, and have fortitude," Justice Kennedy said.

Justice Kennedy said people can achieve their American dream not just by achieving a goal itself, but by the journey along the way.

"If you are like me, all of your dreams and aspirations will not be formed all at once.  Traveling down one path usually gives way to another," Justice Kennedy said. "Every day is a new day to work to fulfill your dream. Never lose sight or focus.  Visualize achieving your dream and take the next step."

Justice Kennedy is serving her first term on the Supreme Court of Ohio. Prior to joining the Supreme Court, Justice Kennedy served at the Butler County Court of Common Pleas, Domestic Relations Division since 1999. Justice Kennedy served as the administrative judge there from 2005 until December 2012. Justice Kennedy began her career in the justice system as a police officer in Hamilton, Ohio. She received her law degree from the University of Cincinnati College of Law.
